It all started with right side/back pain and constipation. I then went back for chest tightness and left arm pain. Did all of the heart tests and came out ok. So I started taking sertraline(Zoloft) doctor thought it was anxiety induced. During that time I was on a 4 pill sample of Linzess 145mcg which seemed to work but cause very watery and frequent diarrhea. It also helped with the pain. Two days after the sample the pain came back so I took MiraLAX for a week. Finally after that didn’t work for six days I called and they prescribed me more Linzess at 75 mcg. I’m 3 days in and have had 4 to 5 watery bowel movements a day. Some right side fullness. Left pain has decreased but still there occasionally. I have lost 11 pounds over this month. I am 19. Do you all think I have IBS-c? Or do I have type 2 diabetes? Not sure what to do just very anxious. Hospital tests have thrown up nothing conclusive though they are investigating whether her gallbladder has anything to do with it - though her GP yesterday said she thought it was IBS. I guess I want to know to what extent psychological issues can contribute to IBS as the timing of this one suggests a psychological factor. I don't know how to help her. For example should I downplay it, or do the opposite - if I want it to affect her thoughts less. I was diagnosed with IBS-C many years ago at age 33. Zelnorm was a magical medication for me when it was available. Since then, I have tried Amitiza and Linzess, which I did not tolerate. I had high hopes for Motegrity, which is similar to Zelnorm in drug type and physiological action. Motegrity does work somewhat better for me if I take it first thing in the morning with 16 ounces of purified drinking water at room temperature, then have a high fiber breakfast about 1 to 1.5 hours later, followed by more drinking water. However, I still need to use over the counter (OTC) meds. Oh so very frustrating. I'm trying to take a break from Motegrity (about 2 to 5 consecutive days) if it seems like it's not working at all. Since our tap water is rated as very hard by the county water district (96 parts per billion, with high levels of calcium), I'm also trying to drink more purified water to see if this makes a difference. Thank you for this website and the opportunity to share and support each other. It is greatly appreciated.

Overflow diarrhea

Just wondering if anyone has had this as I've been unwell since before Christmas. I found this site doing a google search for IBS support groups. I was diagnosed with IBS-C last year at 45. My symptoms started after taking the antibiotic, Cephalexin, that my podiatrist prescribed for an ingrown toenail that had become infected. My gastroenterologist recommended Pearl probiotics, a low FODMAP diet, soups, warm water, and Senokot. Both she and my family doctor sent me home with samples of Linzess and Trulance. The Linzess gave me instant relief, but was like taking magnesium citrate or Suprep for a colonoscopy (which I had in June). I also had an abdominal CT that came back normal. I consulted with a wellness clinic which recommended $1,400 in tests (food sensitivity, stool, etc...), but they did not accept insurance, so I did not move forward with them. Besides, my doctor had already done food allergy testing. In September, I switched from the Pearl probiotics to the less expensive Member's Mark 10 Strain Probiotic from Sam's Club. After three weeks, I was having normal bowel movements without the Linzess. I thought that I was cured until mid-December when my symptoms came back with a vengeance and even the Linzess didn't help. That's when I switched to the Trulance, but I found that I had to supplement it with Lactulose after lunch and Senna-S before bed (plain Senna caused abdominal pain) in order to have a normal stool in the morning. Then, I read somewhere that the long term use of Senna can damage the colon, so I've stopped taking it daily and alternate between the Linzess and Trulance. My gastroenterologist referred me to an Herbalist, but I have not made an appointment with them, yet. I'm currently trying Florastor along with another probiotioc/prebiotic/digestive enzyme I found on Amazon even though my family doctor said that the studies are inconclusive as to whether or not probiotics help with IBS. I've tried several different fiber supplements, too, after reading that insoluble fiber helps with constipation, but my family doctor said they just bulk up your stool. I'm about to try a supplement for leaky gut to see if that helps. My goal is to get off of these expensive prescriptions. I'll keep you posted.

	Hi everyone,

I'm really grateful to have found this community, and hope I can be supportive to everyone else struggling in here. I've had a long road with IBS-C (as have many folks here it seems) and my boyfriend finally suggested I look for a support group, as so much of the suffering with this condition comes from feeling like you're the ONLY one who can't eat normal food, and live a normal life among your friends and family. I've moved back and forth between the U.S. and the Middle East since college, and with one bout of food poisoning and another, picked up an IBS-C problem that I just can't seem to heal. After two colonoscopies, upper endoscopies, and a pill camera, my gastroenterologist in the U.S. finally caught an image of several large worms living in my Ileum in 2018. Unfortunately they misdiagnosed the type of parasite, and it took another year or so to finally get treated for hookworm, which seemed to eliminate my really severe symptoms (constant exhaustion, exercise intolerance, severe stomach pain, etc). Now I'm just dealing with the post-infectious IBS and am happy to say that at least linzesse has helped (i way over-did it on the sennosides for years, so stimulant laxatives are an absolute non-starter at this point).

The thing I think is hard, and I'd love to know if other people struggle with this, is that I also deal with depression/anxiety and the digestive problems have launched a really vicious cycle with those. In the years that I had to stop exercising because of the hookworm, I got really depressed (exercise had been a really important part of mental health maintenance). Now I'm doing better, but on days when I'm really bloated or constipated, it can be really hard to get the exercise in. And of course, you don't feel like going out and socializing when your stomach is acting up, and that can also be isolating. Would really like to hear how others have coped with the back and forth between mental health issues and their gut. I'm trying my best with the medications, yoga, meditation, running whenever I can, and diet, but sometimes it feels like nothing you do is ever enough to prevent a flare up. Just feeling pretty discouraged, but hopeful about joining this support group.

Thank you for listening and take care!

I went to the doctor today and was told for 2 weeks to eliminate gluten, artificial sweeteners, soy, lactose, etc. Basically if it’s processed, don’t eat it. If it comes from a container, don’t eat it. If “man” has touched it, don’t eat it. I was given a prescription for Bentyl for the cramps. This illness is so hard to deal with sometimes. I never know when the cramps are going to hit. And I cannot hold the urge to have a bowel movement like normal people. It is nice to know there are others that suffer and understand our pain. People that don’t deal with this truly don’t understand how debilitating it can be.

Introduction

Evening all. I haven't been diagnosed with ibs , however I have been having bowel problems since around February 2023. I have barretts oesophagus , diverticular and hemorrhoids. Also i take ppi's as i have too much acid .The diverticular was diagnosed after a scan i had as i had a fecal impaction and this diagnosis was back in around 2017-2018. In early 2023 I had a need to go and held off until I got home ( i know and I no longer do this) . The urge got stronger and stronger and I suddenly got cramps and had to literally just soil myself and things improved. I was ok for a couple of days and then install started getting an urgency out of nowhere and getting caught out , along with some bad cramping. I felt though that I had some sort of constipation and so I upped my fibre by quite a lot and the cramping disappeared and I stopped getting caught out , although I was having an urgency every morning with little warning and the feeling of incomplete movement. I also had strange almost chemical/acid smell from my bm as well as being darker and lots of small chipolata shapes as opposed to one or two cigar ones. Eventually I had an endoscopy and a colonoscopy and nothing was found , however the prep/ cleanse (plenvu) totally rid me of my symptoms. However after a while some came back .I very rarely get cramping , maybe four times in thirty months and diarrhoea maybe four times in that time . However my bowels still aren't quite right and although no pain i can't explain. Today is a prime example as they don't feel right and i have had four movements with little warning. Kind of lost and hoping someone might have an idea . It all started around February 23 , just a couple of months before my 53rd birthday , now 55 . Edit to add i was showing quite bad inflammation too and my left side would feel very big /full , but this also has subsided since the colonoscopy which was just over a year ago.

Hi there!

I totally feel you.
