Welcome and Newly Diagnosed

This is the place to start with introductions for new members with motility problems.

You've arrived at a community for IBS Patients created by the Founder, Jeffrey Roberts, who also created the very first IBS website and community on the internet.

I began my work in IBS in 1987 when I was involved in a local support group for IBS sufferers and then launched my first IBS website in 1995.

Our community is a safe space to discuss gastrointestinal diseases, to offer one another support, and to share experiences and proven coping strategies. Members are encouraged to speak freely about problems, concerns, frustrations, and to contribute their helpful hints, information, encouragement, and support. We never expect anyone to volunteer any information they wish to keep private.

I hope knowing there are other patients just like you who have IBS, means you are not alone.

Hello, My name is Jill and I am 22 and have been diagnosed with IBS-D. I've been to several doctors and all my tests come up negative. The only test left for me is a colonoscopy (my 1st doctor did an endoscopy but didn't think a colonoscopy was needed) but now I with other symptoms I will probably have to do one. My biggest struggle is being 22 and and early in the work-force. I have a good job and perform well but some days are just so bad I have to rush home and barely make it in time. It is debilitating and my flare ups are extremely painful and gives me a lot of panic attacks. I am glad I found a group where people can understand.

Hello friends, I tell you my sad story. I have been under psychiatric treatment for more than 15 years but the death of my father made me appear very strange symptoms of irritable bowel: hypersensitivity to almost all drugs and food, more fatigue, dizziness, more depression, anxiety, and so on. They did all the possible studies and they gave me well. Also all the medications that are generally prescribed for ibs cause me more depression, confusion and more fatigue. I can no longer stand almost any food, only lean meats and 2 types of vegetables, and what makes me worse is the sugar and flour. I have tried xifafan and neomycin and I have felt much worse. Obviously m…

Hi. I am F20 and I am so tired of struggling with IBS. As I child I was always very healthy and normal. In the fall of 2016 I was a senior in high school and I began vomiting and having some mild lower abdominal pains once in a while. Nothing really serious I just took a few more sick days from school than normal. Early February I woke up vomiting and the lower abdominal pain had become so severe that I was taken to the emergency room. I was checked for apendicitis, given a CT scan, an ultrasound, and finally with a physical vaginal exam it was discovered that I had an ovarian cyst which doctors immediately said was the problem. I was sent home with pain meds that had a s…

Don't know what the tags are. I have had IBS-M for awhile. I have a gastroenterologist. I have had D for about 2 weeks. Dr. said to take Immodium (pills) which I finally did for one day. The next day, today, I have C. Thank you Immodium. Now, I don't know what to eat. When the Immodium wears off, I don't know if I will have D, C, or be normal. I use 1/2 dose of Miralax with C which works well. I am on the FODMAP diet which has reduced my gas. Bowel stool samples were normal. I am not using Mirilax now. I am waiting to see what happens. I also have removed gall bladder, GERD, and EOE (too many white blood cells on the esophugus). I am on the elimination diet for EOE.

Hi. New to the forum. I am a middle aged man with IBS-D for over 12 years. I have been scoped, had motility tests etc and other than "spastic colon" no other diagnosis in my GI tract. I find it strange that I am probably about 20+ lbs overweight, go to gym 5-6 times a week, conscious of my diet, have 3-5 bowel movements a day and find it very very difficult to lose weight. I have had some luck recently with smoothies (vegetable based proteins not whey). Saw an endocrinologist and all seems normal there. Wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences. One particular symptom of my IBS that can be factored into this is that my gut will be extremely loud, accompa…

Hello, 3 months ago I was diagnosed with IBS by the ER at hospital after doing blood test and CT which all came good. Pain is in left right side. after my ER visit i went to my doctor and he said its not IBS because i dont have Diarrhea or constipation and he suspect Diverticulitis. I showed him CT scan results which cleared the bowel of any abnormalities. He is puzzled and I actually feel sorry for him because he is trying so hard but also I am in pain and feel frustrated. My symptoms are just soreness in lower left side. Cramps, gas and bloating. Could it be IBS without D & C? He also referred me to do physio as he is suspecting it could be a Psoas muscle as …

About six months after having bowel resection surgery, I noticed a change in my bowel habits and narrowed it down to certain foods. Has anyone else encountered this?

After living with IBS-D for about 18 years, I seem to have recently experienced IBS-C for the first time, and I'm searching for magic bullet that will control it as effectively as the solution I found for controlling IBS-D. Years ago I went on the internet to an IBS forum and read a post by a woman who claimed that she had found a way to control her IBS-D. She claimed that her research suggested IBS-D could be caused by excessive bile secretion, and that calcium with vitamin D could be used to soak up the excess bile. I have no idea whether her conjecture was technically correct, but I took her advice, and began taking 300 to 600 mg of calcium with vitamin D at mealtimes …

Has anyone had a problem when they drink water and then you get the usual lower ibs cramps? Also does streaching when you wake up in the morning set it off?

I found this support group by chance and I'm hoping to find some help to understand and cope this condition. I first noticed symptoms about a year or so ago, during an attempt to switch to a more vegetable and fruit based diet. I would eat food, and especially if it was a salad I would be sprinting to the bathroom within a half an hour and sometimes multiple times afterwards. I've tried to figure out what triggers my body's reaction, by systematically trying salads with and without certain vegetables. I've also incorporated fiber capsules as well as probiotics, they seem to help but I still find myself wondering if I eat even a small salad will it sit well with me or not.…

Hi All, I'm new to this group, having just left another one that scared the hell out of me. I do have mental health issues, which I'm sure contribute to my daily struggles with IBS-C, and I do have a story, but will let you know for now I suffer from debilitating anxiety, equally debilitating IBS-C, have very little medical support, am on Constella (or Linzess, as it's know in the US), don't use stimulate laxatives, and am wondering what your views of long-term use of Constella happen to be? It's not classified as a laxative, and has no stimulant properties, and I've been on it for two years as max dose. Can anyone provide their own experiences with Constel…

Hello, Thanx for the invite to a new forum, A little about me I was diagnosed with IBS 10 yrs ago. Ive always had bloating and IBS-d issues all my life but finally did something about it . I went through all the tests, The H.Pyroi(?) and the endo/colonoscopies which all came back clear which resulted in the IBS diagnosis. After that I went to a Naturopath and a Dietitian who put my on the FODMAP diet. I was on that for 5 years and felt really good so I started adding non FODMAP foods back into my diet. I managed to work out that my main triggers were stress, Garlic, Onion and Green Apples. I was pretty symptom free for 5 years until now. My IBS-d is …

I am the founder of this new community. I have been an IBS sufferer for 25+ years. I was the original Founder of the IBS Self Help and Support Group. I have testified to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) several times on behalf of IBS patients. My testimony to the FDA Advisory Committee about Lotronex was instrumental in returning the drug to the market in 2002 for diarrhea predominant IBS sufferers. I also provided testimony to the FDA in support of Zelnorm for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation and constipation predominant IBS. I have appeared in numerous publications and have been on television representing IBS Patients. I co-…

I was asked why did I start this new community? How is this intended to differ from my long-existing website/forums, or is it intended to replace them? Are they free to users or am I promoting anything? All good questions and I thought others might appreciate my answer perhaps to decide for yourself if this is a group you'd like to be apart of. I hope so! J*
