Welcome and Newly Diagnosed
This is the place to start with introductions for new members with motility problems.
You've arrived at a community for IBS Patients created by the Founder, Jeffrey Roberts, who also created the very first IBS website and community on the internet.
I began my work in IBS in 1987 when I was involved in a local support group for IBS sufferers and then launched my first IBS website in 1995.
Our community is a safe space to discuss gastrointestinal diseases, to offer one another support, and to share experiences and proven coping strategies. Members are encouraged to speak freely about problems, concerns, frustrations, and to contribute their helpful hints, information, encouragement, and support. We never expect anyone to volunteer any information they wish to keep private.
I hope knowing there are other patients just like you who have IBS, means you are not alone.

I am struggling with IBS after a severe e-coli infection. This has been going on for 3 months, it’s often constipation but then swings into diarrhea with intestinal and sometimes stomach spasms, nausea and vomiting. I’ve lost 48 lbs in that time and I don’t know how much more I can take of this. I’m doing my best to follow the FODMAP diet and my doctor had tried dicyclomycin for the spasms and Reglan for the constipation, which helped with the constipation but then threw me into a miserable bout of diarrhea, spasms, nausea and vomiting. I started a new job 12/2 and luckily it’s home office, because there is no way I could work in an office for 8 hours at this point, but I…

I have had anxiety issues and digestive issues the last few months after breaking my arm badly and doing various pain meds etc. Still trying to heal the arm 4 months later but the anxiety and stomach issues are actually possibly worse than the arm pain as an issue... Talked to a gastroenterologist this week and I seem to be most likely dealing with IBS-C... But I also have troubles sleeping and with managing anxiety.. Wondering if I should just take the Linzess or other similar meds to try to manage the IBS-C and then look at possible meds to try to treat the feelings of anxiety and occassional anxiety attacks later... Or perhaps talk to another doctor about possibly taki…

So I was diagnosed with IBS back in 2003. I’ve managed to live a relatively normal life with it up until about 6 months ago. I’m about to turn 50 for context. I eat healthy as I’ve been able to identify my triggers through elimination diets, sensitivity test, etc. I’m taking medical leave as I know stress can cause issues and as a CFO of a company of 500+ employees I have my fair share of stress. Now all that said I began to have bad cramps, nauseous was, and explosive diarrhea that would come on very suddenly unlike what I had been used to before which was constipation leading to the previously stated symptoms. Now I find myself getting sick every three …

Hi. I'm new to the group and have had IBS-D for a number of years now. I had my gallbladder removed about 10 month ago which has, slowly but surely, made my IBS-D worse. My doctor put me on Cholestyramine to try, 1/2 packet 1x a day. First, bad constipation. Reduced to 1/3 packet, still constipation, even with Miralax (as dr suggested). Reduced to 1/4 packet, back to bad diarrhea. Has anyone had any luck with this med?

I'm new to the group and have a couple of questions. I have suffered with gastritis and stomach pain for years, mostly induced by stress. I am currently using pantoprazole and MiraLAX (1 dose per day). Over that last six months, I have started having significant stomach pain after a bowel movement. It usually start about 30 minute after, ramps up and then begins to subside. Usually by the next morning, little or no pain. Next bowel movement, it starts again. I was referred to a GI physicians assistant after telling my doctor. She listen to my symptoms and said; Yea, you probably have IBS-C. I was hoping or more. The MiraLAX seems to help but does not relie…

I was diagnosed with ibs-c. My abdominal is killing me everyday. I lost 20 lbs over last 4 years. My blood pressure is really low 88/58. That why I’m home all the time and can’t drive any more. Thank God the breathing method helps me to relieve some pain. Wondering if I should go back to China to try traditional Chinese medicine to treat my pain? I’m 63 now and want to enjoy my retirement freedom without pain.

IBS-M. Started out as IBS-C, but for the past year it's alternating between the C and the D. The diarrhea started after I had food poisoning last year. My doc told me to take probiotics and eat lots of fermented food to correct my gut flora. For the constipation, I put about 1/8 tsp of miralax in my coffee each day to help keep me regular. The problem is, I never know whether I'm going to have C or D at any given time. Plus, I have hemmorhoids and scars from a fissure that exacerbate the problem and can be excruciating. I haven't tried the FODMAP diet yet, but probably will soon. I'm reading a book that says that some people's IBS can be caused by histamines. It recommend…

Hello! Over the years, I have had pain in my lower abdomen - usually during stressful times. Tests revealed nothing but the pain is excruciating and appears after a bowel moment and will last all day. If I wake up with bloating, I don't have the pain. So if I am bloating all day without releasing a bowel movement, I have no pain. It's when the bowel movement is released, I have the pain. What would cause this? Is it because my bowel movement wasn't complete? Should I use a laxative? In the past, after about a week or so (sometimes longer) the pain goes away completely until my next flare-up. I have been to ER's, doctors, etc and get no relief from t…

I’ve been battling acid reflux and stomach cramping for almost 2 years now. Almost a year ago I began experiencing pain from my tmj. And more than a week ago I prevented myself from blacking out from who knows what. I’ve had diarrhea consistently and the pain is still here. It burns from my throat to my bladder. I’m on fire with everything I try to eat. Bread makes it worse. Now I know. I’m tired. Dicyclomine left me on the floor at my work and I stopped taking it. But my doctor is unavailable on weekends. I guess this is a small vent for me. I’m a mess all over and need breaks to be able to stand up again. I just want to feel okay and I want to know what’s wrong with me.…

Hello, I saw my GP earlier this week. I had done lots of tests (blood + stool), except one which I'm waiting for the results of. If that one is negative, he's sure it's IBS. But he's sure enough anyway he's put me on Colofac (twice daily), as well as a mild laxative twice daily in case there's impaction. I've been taking the meds for three days now but I'm not noticing a difference (yet). My lower belly protrudes a lot, but so does my stomach, which also feels rock hard. I look like I'm pregnant and I'm often in pain... bending over (tying shoe laces etc) has become difficult because my stomach is in the way... I used to get stomach cramps sometimes, 4 hours after ea…

I have suffered with IBS with chronic diarrhea since my teens and am now in my forties, with ups and downs with my my symptoms. The past several months have been particularly bad with severe bloating, gas, and diarrhea. I have swelling under my left rib that was recently diagnosed as a cyst on my kidneys and my doctor also said I have some signs of a fatty liver. Has anyone with IBS experienced this before, is there a connection between the two? I am awaiting a colonoscopy ( last one in 2013 confirmed IBS diagnosis) and an appointment with a dietician and gastroentinologist.

I was diagnosed with IBD, Ulcerative Colitis, over 25 years ago. I've had a relatively mild case, with periodic flare ups over the years. Recently, I was diagnosed with IBS-C, having the bloating, pains, blood and periodic constipation symptoms that were just enough different from my UC for me to look further into. (Cause UC for 25 years wasn't enough fun). I tried to find out if anyone in this group had the combo 1-2 punch of IBD with IBS-C but i could not find any titles that sounded like it. Just wondering if anyone else can relate. The challenges of this newer IBS-C dx are much harder than my IBD 😞.

How much is stress contributing to ibs-c? I am so stressed over this. It’s probably contributing to my symptoms. I feel like my life is over.

My IBS-C goes like this. I have at least two movements a day. My stools are some firm and some a bit softer. They make it into my rectum and I feel the urge to go. Then I get to the toilet right away. At that point the urge to push them out disappears!! I try to focus on my pelvic floor muscles I’m still working on that. I’m sitting there with a load but unable to get started. I’m using as little manual ( fingers) extraction as possible and pushing at the same time. please don’t tell me I’m focusing on a bowel movement too much. If I give up I just feel like a little kid with a full diaper. How do I improve my ability to push my stools out without a gloved hand and l…
