Welcome and Newly Diagnosed
This is the place to start with introductions for new members with motility problems.
You've arrived at a community for IBS Patients created by the Founder, Jeffrey Roberts, who also created the very first IBS website and community on the internet.
I began my work in IBS in 1987 when I was involved in a local support group for IBS sufferers and then launched my first IBS website in 1995.
Our community is a safe space to discuss gastrointestinal diseases, to offer one another support, and to share experiences and proven coping strategies. Members are encouraged to speak freely about problems, concerns, frustrations, and to contribute their helpful hints, information, encouragement, and support. We never expect anyone to volunteer any information they wish to keep private.
I hope knowing there are other patients just like you who have IBS, means you are not alone.

Hi all - So very, very glad to have found this forum. A quick intro which I'll combine with a question: is it possible to have IBS without pain? I'm 59, have been having periodic diarrhea for about 12 years now. Didn't take it seriously as it didn't interfere much with life at the time. Until last Fall. The diarrhea was horrendous, but worse was/is the disabling, incapacitating, crippling fatigue. History: Gallbladder removal in November 2022 due to pain in my back and nausea. Recovery quite challenging - I just felt sick. Never really have felt 100% since, although I've had times that are better than others. Pain and nausea are now gone afte…

I'm a 63 year old man and I've been suffering ibs for over 42 years - I was diagnosed in the early 80s and I've had the colonoscopy etc. My main symptom is pain which can be extremely severe, often on a daily basis. I've always felt the pain mainly around the back- 95% of the time. I know it's referred from my gut as it's often relieved after I've passed gas or had a bm. It also seems to be the cause of severe facial pain weirdly enough - not as bad as trigeminal neuralgia I'm sure but crippling enough at times. I've often noticed the facial pain coming on after an incomplete bm, so I'm pretty sure it's referred from my gut. Ibs is such a terrible affliction, I wouldn't …

hi all i’m just using this to rant because i can’t sleep from these ibs pains but yeah i got these extremely bad stabbing pains in my stomach two weeks after my 18th birthday that were so bad i had to be taken to the er and put on morphine. did ekg, chest x-ray, and ct scan but saw i had nothing wrong with me on paper. they handed me a form saying “pain without a cause” that said to not kill myself and do yoga😂and sent me home with no pain meds. after about two weeks the pains got better and honestly disappeared for the most part. although during that time the only way for me to get through the pain was self medicating with weed(i was CA). so after a couple months of no …

Hi! I have been newly diagnosed with IBS, which was a relief to know that I was going crazy, however, my anxiety has been over the top heightened. I've suffered with anxiety my whole life, but the anxiety that is coming from my IBS is like nothing I've ever experienced before. I am shaking and trying to find the route cause of my anxiety, even though I know its from the IBS. I've been dealing with flare ups for roughly three weeks, and I feel like there isn't an end to this madness. I woke up in the middle of the night last night in a panic and absolutely uncontrollable shaking. I've never been so scared and lost in my life. I don't really know what I am trying to g…

Hi I am 16 years old and suffer from Ibs, I’ve been struggling going to school recently because of some sort of stress, whenever I tell people I have got ibs they come up with silliness, teasing, calling me a liar and all sorts of stupid questions, is there anyway I could stop stressing about school because I’m missing out on my most important year.

I have struggled with ibs for years. Now as I get older I am finding that my fear of having an accident in public keeps me from doing any social activities. This consumes my thought process daily and I stay close to home at all times. I never go out to eat anymore and any time I am invited to do something the first thought is ....what if I get that rush of urge to have bowel movement. How can I avoid this anxiety???

Hi there, I’m new to this community and I’m newly diagnosed with IBS. I’ve been experiencing a lot of anxiety and depression and rapid heart beats or palpations when I’m experiencing symptoms. I’m also going between eating and not eating as I can’t decide which feels worse. I often have feelings of weakness and stomach selling and nausea along with frequent trips to bathroom. Mornings are hellish as everything starts at 4:30 am and I don’t feel human until near moon. How do I live like this. Need words of hope. And any suggestions please!

Good morning everyone, I am new to this site and grateful to have found such a caring community. I was diagnosed about 25 years ago with IBS after experiencing severe pain in my upper right abdomen. Levsinex worked wonders to control the flare ups, and going on a low-dose of SSRI kept it at bay and has enabled me to live pretty much symptom-free. Fast-forward to August 2020, I started experiencing periodic loose stools. By mid-September it advanced to full-blown diarrhea several times a day. My doc prescribed a z-pack which did the trick while I was on it, but the diarrhea soon returned once the meds left my system. Stool tests, bloodwork, and colonoscopy all came back no…

hi everyone, I’m new to this group. I started having problems 4yrs ago. The doctors gave me many tests over the years and keep telling me it’s IBS-c. It never goes away but cycles through symptoms. I’ve tried everything and now take laxatives 2x a day and try to walk lots. Heat helps but sometimes the pain is so bad. Mornings and evenings are the worst with burping and cramps. The pain recently went from my right side to upper stomach with my tongue feeling numb sometimes. I am waiting for another throat scope to make sure everything is okay. I’m going through menopause also and have been having issues there so they put me on hormone therapy too. I get exhausted from even…

I have been dealing with IBS since 2020, at that time and currently, I've been currently texperincing stomach pain, severe nausea and vomitting. The vomitting began at least four days at a time, with constant nausea and then vomitting. I would then get relief for a few more days. On those days I ate what I wanted with no problem. It was like I wasn't even ever sick. But then it would happen again, for a few more days, then I would be fine again for a few more. This went on for months, then it would happen every other day or so. I should also mention how it happens. I would would wake up feeling fine, drinking a cup of coffee and such. Then after one or two times of going …

I used to be a petite model. And the pressure to be thin was more than any teenager could ever bare. I’ll never forget when one of my model friends turned me on too laxatives. I did well on them for around 3 years before they no longer worked and “not eating/binging and throwing up” in my sick, immature, mind was the faster way to get thin. I never imagined that ten years later, I’d quit modeling, get help for my eating disorders and get better. I beat not only my eating disorders, but the mental aspect of the disorder. And finally started to accept my body as I was, a curvy, short, Italian girl. It was so nice to not have to read labels and no longer watch everybody else…

Has anyone else relapsed after getting covid? I don't know what the connection could be, I suspect it could be the microbiome, but I have been mostly in remission for almost 2 years until this virus destroyed all my gains overnight a few weeks ago. This is the third time I get it, it seems the vaccine did not work for me, the previous two times it didn't impact my IBS this much. This is a never ending nightmare. Any tips?

I have been recently diagnosed with IBS, and I believe that I am type "C." I am so discouraged since I don't know where to begin. My doctor has recommended a medicine and a probiotic, and sometimes the medicine and the probiotic work, and sometimes, they don't. I am open to all suggestions since I am finding it hard to cope with this. Thank you, Jane

I'm a 61 year old woman who has had IBS of a mixed version until a couple of months ago and now I can't get a crap without taking an Exlax. My gastro prescribed Amitiza but it didn't work at the 8mcg dose and at the 24mcg it messes with my blood pressure (goes low then zooms up, I already have messed up bp as it is) and gives me a terrible headache. Miralax just sits inside me and stool softeners the same. Feels like I have a golf ball in my upper left; I had a CT scan with contrast, showed nothing wrong; I couldn't get through the colonscopy prep, nearly passed out, so will have to be reattempted at some point. I am just at my wit's end, its never been this bad before. I…

Hi all, Not formally diagnosed here, but will be calling my doctor soon. I am 59 soon to be 60 and I feel like I've been affected in various ways by sensitive digestion since I was a child. As a child I often had low energy and was often very cold even in warm weather. I've gotten through most of life okay, but recently my father entered hospice and I feel as if that stress has exacerbated my digestive problems. I used to be okay with coffee, but now it produces constant wet farts and so I've cut out. It's a shame because I really love coffee. I have strange poops. I pass a normalish bowel movement once a day, but I have several, usually 2 to 3 tiny bowel …

My husband, 79, has had alternating diarrhea and constipation for the last year. He has had a colonoscopy with no problems revealed in the bowel. Everything I read on IBS matches his symptoms except for the pain. He sometimes has stomach pain when he is constipated but none otherwise. Doctor has kind of given up I think.

Hi. I've been diagnosed 10yrs now, I have ibs mixed , predominantly its D . I've had a few too many flare ups this year. I am afraid too eat. What foods are best during flare ups ? There are conflicting information online. My GP isn't much help, I can't eat certain foods , apples, banana, nuts, yogurts , no matter what I eat I have to go to the bathroom straight after. I've been prescribed Mebeverine and peppermint capsules, they somewhat help . It makes me anxious to eat at work especially
