Welcome and Newly Diagnosed

This is the place to start with introductions for new members with motility problems.

You've arrived at a community for IBS Patients created by the Founder, Jeffrey Roberts, who also created the very first IBS website and community on the internet.

I began my work in IBS in 1987 when I was involved in a local support group for IBS sufferers and then launched my first IBS website in 1995.

Our community is a safe space to discuss gastrointestinal diseases, to offer one another support, and to share experiences and proven coping strategies. Members are encouraged to speak freely about problems, concerns, frustrations, and to contribute their helpful hints, information, encouragement, and support. We never expect anyone to volunteer any information they wish to keep private.

I hope knowing there are other patients just like you who have IBS, means you are not alone.

I have had IBS mixed (D & C). Been put on so many different medications to no avail. Doctors are tired of me calling for help, but I’ve tried everything. Tell me well you have IBS, you’re either going to have diarrhea or constipation, theirs no fixing you. Medications make other symptoms and affect other organs.

Hi everyone, I'm 34 years old, female. Six months ago I was diagnosed with c-diff after having taken clindamycin. I was prescribed a vancomycin taper regimen, which I completed 4 months ago, to treat the c-diff. Since then I have been struggling with IBS. I had a flexible sigmoidoscopy done to rule out other causes of my symptoms. My gastroenterologist concluded that I have post-infectious IBS. I'm going to go into some detail about my symptoms, I hope it's not TMI. Before I got sick, I would have 1 or 2 bowel movements daily. Now, I'm very, very lucky if I have 3 or 4. Most days I go at least 5-7 times, sometimes 10+. It usually starts off formed and…

Hi everyone, i’m an 18 year old female and have been suffering with IBS symptoms since I was 16. I finally got a diagnosis of IBS_D last week. I start uni in 3 weeks and i’m terrified about making friends. I have a great boyfriend who’s really supportive and understanding but it’s embarrassing having to leave events and constantly scouting out the nearest toilet. It’s really upsetting because alcohol is a huge trigger for me so I can’t attend clubs or freshers events (because who wants to go to those sober? 😂) and I can’t go out to eat either without issues or anxiety about my stomach starting problems. I’ve not been on a date or out for a meal with my boyfriend for month…

Hi everyone, I'm hoping to hear from someone who has been through this or knows someone who has. Right now, my gastro Dr is out of the country. I have a message in for a nurse to call me but trying to get in to see another Dr in the practice is futile as they are booked months out. I've had IBS-D since mid 20's, I'm mid 50's now. Mostly well contained until 3 years ago. I was using Imodium to help. Mostly stayed away from my trigger foods. About 3 years ago, it really ramped up to the point I couldn't leave me house. If I absolutely had to, I wouldn't eat or drink until I got back, even if that meant into the night. Imodium usage went up to 5-8 a day. …

I've lived with IBS for as long as I can remember. Recently I've been having episodes of liquid diarrhea that brings on a vomit response accompanied by dripping sweat and shaking throughout my body. It is extremely rough and I would like to not go through that again. My biggest symptom of IBS is lack of motility. I just don't have an urge to evacuate my bowels even though they are full and rumbling. I use glycerin suppositories to create an urge and void my bowels. My doctor didn't seem concerned about daily usage of suppositories and suggested I try Citrucel. That just gave me more gas and an even more uncomfortable sensation of bloating. I'm wondering if anyone …

Hello everyone: I have not been formally diagnosed with IBS, but rather I have read quite a bit about this topic after experiencing currently almost daily IBS-D. Prior to my gastric sleeve procedure 8 years ago, I had only occasional "episodes," but about 2 years post gastric sleeve procedure, it now occurs 3-4x per week. It has definitely impacted my lifestyle, such as taking long walks outdoors, making plans that always include a restroom in proximity, having extra clothing to wear with me wherever I go. It is challenging, to say the least.

I'm new here but not new to IBS which I've had since I was a child and it seems to get worse as I get older. I've been diagnosed with IBS and told its aggravated by my anxiety which is something else I have. So bad eating habits may trigger an IBS attack but the anxiety fuels it. Sometimes it's not even bad eating, but purely anxiety that causes the symptoms. I've had many tests including colonoscopy, endoscopy, biopsies taken and even had my gallbladder removed when stones were discovered during routine scan. This did nothing to help with the IBS and in fact now that I have no gallbladder my digestive system is more fragile and prone to even more IBS…

I found this site by doing a Google search, and I'm glad to have found it. I was diagnosed with IBS several years ago. It runs my life. I try to watch my diet. I usually only eat once a day. Now that I'm a widow of 4 1/2 years, I rarely cook anything anymore. I usually just nuke some mac and cheese and call that dinner. My IBS is aggravated by stress. When my brother was diagnosed with oral cancer two years ago and went through chemo and radiation, I had diarrhea for the entire seven months of his treatment. No medication that my doctor prescribed worked for me, so I rarely ate anything. As soon as he was declared free of cancer, things went back to normal. Funny how the …

In February I started having indigestion in my lower abdomen. Around the same time, I started having bouts of diarrhea with intense cramping about once a week and would not have any bowel movements between those bouts. These bouts would last up to 40 minutes and I sometimes would feel like throwing up. Had an endoscopy which showed chronic gastritis but my doctor said this had nothing to do with the diarrhea. I also had an MRI of the lower abdomen and the results for all my organs/glands were normal. Previous to these tests, I had a routine colonoscopy a year ago. Also normal. The doctor said that I might have IBS. I am 71 years old.

Hi there, hoping someone might be able to provide some guidance or support based on similar experiences. 3 months ago I had appendicitis and had my appendix removed, upon returning home from the hospital my toilet habits and cleaning routine was fine. I was on a course of antibiotics which dried out my skin extremely, especially between fingers, face and my bum. i soon realised after using the bathroom I would clean like normal and have to go back to clean several times over 1-2 hours. I tried to treat it as if it was dry skin that hadn’t healed, such as salt baths, petroleum jelly etc.. But the issue has persisted. Does anyone have any advice or similar exp…

Hello! I am new here and hoping to get some support and/or help. I have been struggling with abdominal issues, including EXTREME bloating for no apparent reason, since summer of 2018. About six months ago -- after many tests and procedures -- I was diagnosed with IBS-C. Although it has gotten better with diet / life changes and supplements, the constipation and bloating (I'm even bloated when my BM's are regular and even if I only drink liquids all day) are constant issues. I've had the following procedures: colonoscopy, endoscopy, gastric emptying, upper GI, ultrasounds, CT scans. And been on the following meds: Linzess, Mirtazapine (to increase appetite), and …

Hi all, I have been dealing with fluctuating GI health for a little over a year now. I would really love some help. Due to my age, I have been overlooked by many providers, which say I am too young to have GI issues out of the blue. Two months after COVID, I have experienced life altering symptoms. It began with difficulties using the restroom (not uncommon as I was diagnosed IBS constipation many moons ago, which I never took seriously) and later turned into nervous system bodily responses. I started having tachycardia and elevated blood pressure episodes at every moment of minor exertion. From standing in the sun for too long or drinking half a glass of wine. I wen…

I'm looking for a support group for my IBS-C. At times, when the IBS-C flares up, I fall into a depression that scares me. I do take daily medication for clinical depression, and it is very well controlled. My IBS-C, however, flares up at least once a week and is unpredictable. The flare-up usually triggers a depressive episode which is the scary part of the condition. I take Amitiza twice daily I have been diagnosed with IBS-C for over two years and am also lactose intolerant. I take a lactose enzyme tablet when I consume dairy and often the tablet doesn't seem to help. Bloating, gas, and diarrhea result. I'm retired and had hoped to travel. The IBS-C has stopp…

In 2017 I had colonoscopy after some kind of intestinal flair and was told it was diverticulits and put on antibiotics. Was told I need to keep things " flowing" to prevent another infection of the diverticulosis. I started out on stoll doftners, worked for couple years, a visit to gastro dr and told him stool sotners weren't doing it. From that point on was told to take miralax. My primary Dr recommended fiber con pills. Talk about gut pain and bloating, NO WAY can I do fiber supplements. Fast forward, miralax started bloating me and trapped gas because I was needing to take it 2xs a day. I am now in different city, new primary Dr. She put me on Linzess. What a relief ev…

Hello, I am hoping a few of you might have ideas about things I can try to calm my poor guts. I’ve had diarrhea flare ups for more than 15 years…lately the bouts are more frequent and long lasting. Urgency is a problem, though I rarely have accidents, and now I’ve developed pronounced gurgling and abdominal pain. This current flare up causes 5-6 diarrhea episodes a day, even though I’m not eating very much. I still do some paid writing work which thankfully I do from home. The first GI doc I saw diagnosed me with microscopic colitis, therefore I’ve had a couple courses of budesonide which didn’t help much. I’ve now had three more colonoscopies and my current GI …

Hi there! I was diagnosed with IBS by my gastroenterologist following a colonoscopy in January 2022. I am 58 years old and my last colonoscopy was in 2010 When I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, or actually Proctitis since it was so localized. My symptoms in 2010 were bloody stool so it was very obvious when I was flaring. I was given a prescription for Canasa and found a support group that recommended a Paleo diet. This worked great for me for many years. I stayed (mostly) grain free and dairy free and felt that I had a very good handle on what foods could trigger an attack. In January, I had another colonoscopy because I was waking up with horrible cramping and …

I have suffered with almost continuous IBS symptoms for 10 years now. Intense stomach pain a few hours after eating (usually night times), followed by the feeling of glass passing through my bowels, wind, bloating, cramps and urgent, rather explosive trips to the toilet. I usually self-starve for a couple of days until my bowels recover enough to face food again. An ultrasound scan at my doctors practice confirmed my bowels were highly inflamed. By the process of eliminating ingredients I have finally found the source of my problems, its often located at the very end of the ingredient list. The culprit is a natural food colourant by the name of "Annatto" or the Europ…

Hi I've been suffering from IBS since 2012. I was 14 at the time. I am 25 at the time of writing this post. When I started highschool, i was very insecure of my weight and throughout the whole first year of high school, I was eating very little and doing a lot of cardio. I went from 145 lbs to 99 lbs at the time. I realized the weight change made me very anorexic and my forearms became very thin, so in the summer of 2012, I spent the majority of time trying to get back to a decent shape. Unfortunately, I was young back then and made stupid decisions to get back to a decent shape - I was drinking lots of milk in place of water, eating high oil, high fat foods (such as baco…

Good Morning - after a lot of blood work, stool samples, an abdominal ultrasound and most recently, an upper endoscopy, my 13 year old was diagnosed with IBS. He has missed almost 4 weeks of school due to the pain and needing to run to the bathroom at odd times. His school has been fantastic with communication and giving him assignments - although he usually feels crappy enough (like a gorilla punched him in the stomach - his words) that he can't even focus on the work. His GI doc started him on Levbid to settle his belly and he has taken 3 pills so far. It has not helped but I imagine it will take more than a day and a half to kick in. We have not found…
