has anyone ever tried SSRIs for their GI issues?
happytummy98 posted a topic in IBS Discussion and Symptoms
My GI doctor suggested I take tiny doses of something like Prozac to help with my "sensitive stomach" since everything I eat hurts me and I've ruled out all other possible causes. This seems like my only answer for now although I'm not crazy about the idea, even if it is a tiny dose. Does anyone have experience with this? -
Patients With IBD Prone to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (Medscape)
Jeffrey Roberts posted a topic in IBS News Articles and Research Results
Patients With IBD Prone to Irritable Bowel Syndrome Ingrid Hein December 16, 2019 Irritable bowel syndrome can have multiple causes, including inflammatory bowel disease, said William Chey, MD, from Michigan Medicine in Ann Arbor. Patients who only have irritable bowel symptoms almost never have inflammatory bowel disease, but "once in remission for IBD, 30% to 40% of patients show signs of IBS," he reported. "That's a lot of people." "I used to say, jokingly, that the gut is the center of the universe," he added, "but as we go from 2019 to 2020, I increasingly believe that it's true >> https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/922712 Medscape Medical News © 2019 -
Inflammatory Bowel Disease vs. Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Jeffrey Roberts posted a topic in IBS Discussion and Symptoms
Gastrointestinal diseases have many overlapping symptoms. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) namely, Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) are two illnesses that effect the gastro-intestinal (GI) tract. Both can cause abdominal pain and changes in bowel movements; however, they are not the same. While there are many similarities between IBD and IBS, it is important to highlight the differences. The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation has updated their Inflammatory Bowel Disease vs. Irritable Bowel Syndrome brochure. It is an excellent resource for both IBD and IBS patients which highlights these differences. >> https://www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org/sites/default/files/2019-10/ibd-and-IBS-brochure-final.pdf The link has been graciously provided by the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation-

IBS or something more severe??!?! I am scared!!!!!
brandonsunshine posted a topic in IBS Discussion and Symptoms
I have bowel issues, where I have feelings of incomplete bowel movements, often, sometimes alternating from constipation, and diarrhea, mostly constipation. I am straining when I have a bowel movement, I do get a "full" feeling, and dull pain, on the left side of my abdomen. It gets better when I have a bowel movement, but it starts back up once I eat something. I have not lost weight, in fact, im gaining weight, and there is no blood in my stool. I do have clear mucus in my stool often. My main complaints are the feeling of incomplete bowel movements, and the "full" feeling in the left side of my abdomen under the rib cage. Some days are worse than others. I am male, 25, and there is no family history of colon cancer. What is this im concerned thank you!- 2 replies

FMT side effects
Jeffrey Roberts posted a topic in IBS Medications, Medical Foods and Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT)
The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) annual meeting reported some observations from patients who were treated with Fecal Matter Transplantation (FMT) for an overgrowth of Clostridium Difficile (C Diff). C Diff is a very serious bowel infection that is difficult to resolve. It is usually caused by antibiotics. FMT has a greater than 90% cure rate for C Diff. However, two observations were made about patients who recovered from C Diff after FMT: 1) Postinfectious-IBS developed in 25% of those that received FMT for their C Diff. 2) Crohn's disease or Ulcerative Colitis patients were likely to have a flaring episode of their disease from the FMT treatment. It appears FMT has some risks and is not a completely benign treatment. FMT has been in clinical trials for the treatment of IBS for the last several years.
