'Nature's Prebiotic' in Human Milk Effective for IBS  Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News

Barcelona, Spain—A key component of human breast milk, dubbed “nature’s prebiotic,” may be an effective treatment for irritable bowel syndrome, new research shows.

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) significantly improved stool consistency and quality of life while reducing bloating and pain in an open-label study of more than 300 men and women with IBS, the study found. Although HMOs are available as an over-the-counter medical food in the United States, the findings are the first to demonstrate their clinical efficacy in a variety of IBS patients. The study was presented at the 2019 United European Gastroenterology Week (abstract OP203).
