What is it? Constipation or Diarrhea?

Hi All!  I'm new here today.  Read a lot of your postings and am amazed at everyone's perseverance as you all progress through this dreaded condition of IBS.  Thank you all for sharing. Here's my wee story shortened from a life long sufferer.  I'm 66, 115 lbs, 5'3 and happily active. My gut can swell so that I look like I am 9 months pregnant and it stays this way for days.  When my IBS acts up it actually debilitates me for several days.  I have to go to bed and I always get a low grade fever...a minimum of three days of my life gone, atleast 3 to 4 times a month.  (My poor husband who can eat anything does not know what to do with me!)  I eat healthy as far as I know.  Anyway, my bowel habits are this:  I live in the bathroom but am not sure if I can diagnose myself with constipation or diarrhea because I can go up to 12 times in a sunshiny day and a further 3 times during the dark night.....but I poop an inch at a time...rabbit pellets, and if I take stool softeners I just poop softer but the same amount.  Slow motility?  Sometimes my bowels empty themselves and I swear I poop 15 feet in one day!  How can such a small person like me poop this much?  I go faithfully everyday.  I poop 12 times a day, an inch or two at a time and never feel empty!  I was diagnosed with hypothyroid 7 years ago and that's when the poop pellets started.  Anyway, I have been told to take Polyethylene Glycol every day for the rest of my life and this is the only instruction I am getting from my GI doctor who also happens to be a surgeon.  Not much help here in rural Ontario!   Eghads!  Thank you for listening!

Hi Beverley,

It does sound like IBS-C by virtue of you having small pellets, regardless of the number of time you are going; however, it's not usual for IBS to wake someone up in the middle of the night to have a bowel movement. I would make sure that you tell that to a doctor.

I wonder if you have ever tried Resotran (Canada)? It might help with forming a more normal stool or least passing stools which aren't pellet like.

Thank you Jeffrey.  I will pursue that. I have other questions that I plan to post on the forum to see what kind of feedback assistance comes, questions that I cannot find the answer to via internet and cannot wait 2 months or more for a phone app't from family doctor.  Take care and thank you so much for this website and all that you share with fellow sufferers. (I try hard not to dwell on suffering.  I feel so great about life when an IBS attack has run its course...Jeckyl and Hyde!)

Beverly. I know exactly what you mean. I just joined this forum the other day. So far my episodes haven’t lasted three days, but I had my first 2-day attack just recently. While they keep me awake, until recently, they’ve always passed by morning. At any rate, yes, I used to have one movement first thing every morning and one after breakfast, and I was good for the day. Now I go several times, usually feeling incomplete, and can go from diarrhea to constipation in one day. I gave also had movements that look like they must have snaked through my entire system, and sometimes, even if I don’t strain, this can bring on the pain. While sometimes I feel better. My physician just prescribed Bentyl. Wondering if anyone has had experience with that.

Hi Beverley,

I'm so sorry that you're continuing to suffer like that. Your symptoms sound a lot like SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth), which can be caused by overgrowths of bacteria and/or yeast, but usually both (except the fever, which is an odd symptom). The root cause can be also start with H. Pylori and low stomach acid or other things like stress. But in any case, my clients overcome these types of issues with functional gut testing and education on herbal supplements so please don't give up hope. I wrote an article about SIBO here: https://www.healthwebmagazine.com/healthy-living/sibo-and-ibs/

Wishing you healing soon!

Lindsey
