Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, affects nine million Britons, causing agonising pain, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation – with few effective treatments available. Now, hundreds of GPs will offer a low dose of mood-boosting drugs to patients, as part of a pioneering study involving 75 healthcare hubs across the North and West of England.
