Faecal leaks anyone?

SusieK

Recommended Posts

I have suffered from IBS for four years & for all that time taken prescription Movicol as I was originally IBS-C . Now over the past 6 months I’m finding when I take exercise even short distances I get embarrassing faecal leaks...I’m so upset that I’ve stopped going out. I wear normal sanitary pads but they don’t really absorb or stop odour.

Has anyone else had this, what did you do? I’m too embarrassed to ask anyone & to even see my doctor. I’ve stopped taking Movicol but this just constipated me.

Help & advice PLEASE...

Dear SusieK,

That really sounds miserable. Could you perhaps take Movicol less often?

I know it can feel embarrassing, but your doctor has certainly seen and heard this before. They might also have some advice.

Did you make any changes in your eating? You can try to increate fiber intake at least...

--I’m so upset that I’ve stopped going out -- be careful with this decision. i know it is very hard to go out with this problem, but if you will cut off your common activities, your brain could be stuck in a vicious circle. Replace this activity with another activity, if you want to stay home instead, e.g.: by some breath meditation.

I've just started getting leaks after having IBS for 15 years. Thankfully for me I can cope by using panty liners -  I need about three to get through the day.

As a 65 year old man this has taken a lot of getting used to. I still find it really upsetting that I have to wear pads.

I'm sorry that you are dealing with this Hetchins_1946. It's really unpleasant. I'm not quite sure where you are, but it's been a challenge for me all year.

Given your age and new symptom, I think it may be wise to mention this to your family physician as symptoms like this can have other causes.

Yes I have had this as a symptom before giving up gluten. Abstaining from gluten has helped tremendously.

I was referred to “ass doctor “ but too embarrassed to go. If it takes  staying away from gluten to avoid the doctor then that is what I will do.

Thanks all.

I've started taking Fybogel twice a day which seems to have helped a bit suggested by my GP.

My faecal Calprotectin level was low, so it's unlikely to be gluten, or IBD which is reassuring.

I've been referred to the gastroenterologists at my local hospital, and in advance of that I'll be having a colonoscopy.

I'm still getting some intermittent light leaks so I'm still wearing the pads which, if nothing else, give me the confidence that I'm not soiling my clothes.
I still don't like the things, but am coming to terms with it.
