Chronic Idiopathic Constipation

Greetings! Happy to have found this forum.  I’ve been dealing with  constipation recently.  Brief background, I believe I’ve always had a slower digestive rate but never really put two and two together until being diagnosed with hypothyroid disorder about 3 1/2 years ago, when the constipation worsened.  As long as 20 years ago (currently 47), I would occasionally have bouts of extreme stomach pain/bloating to the extent I’d be up in pain overnight and lasting into the next day or longer.  Sometimes I would get nauseous to the point of vomiting.  The best description would be that it feels  like my entire digestive system just stops and nothing moves, and whatever is in my stomach is just there stewing about.    I had attributed this to a food allergy or stress and never considered it due to constipation.  (Bowel movements were not every day , but I didn’t experience any other discomfort day to day so I didn’t assume it was constipation causing the stomach pain).   These events would have 2 -3 times a year I’d say, and after being diagnosed with hypothyroid 3 1/2 years ago I did begin to notice the events getting more severe each time, the last time I went to urgent care and they did an X-ray and ct scan and found partial bowel blockage.  After consulting a gi specialist, another CT enterography showed no signs of inflammation but a large amount of stool in the digestive tract, which happened to be after taking 2 caps of miralax for the preceding 10 days even (!).  (A colonoscopy also showed no issues).  The Dr believes the issues are being caused by constipation, so I am trying to get a handle on regulating this.  I have been very diligent with fiber intake, including benefiber, water intake, etc but seems to have little effect.  (Same with exercise) And even with some bm activity there isn’t a full evacuation of stool it seems.  I tried senna first but only twice a week as I thought I it would be detrimental to be reliant on this , and had a stop/start effect.  The Dr prescribed Linzess and I had about 4 days of success and then nothing, and experienced bloating and discomfort plus some weight gain.  So not crazy about trying that any longer!  Since the miralax has had little effect on its own, I haven’t gone back to that either.  But I have been using senna daily now and varying the dose based on day to day bm, and so far so good. Hoping to also examine my diet and control things this way.  But I am somewhat preoccupied with keeping things “moving along” you might say out of fear of having another stomach episode!   Thanks much, look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Dear Ving,

Welcome! It does sure sound like you've gone through a lot with constipation. It looks like you are doing all the right things to try to get this under control.

If you are open to trying different medications, Motegrity or Zelnorm are 2 similar meds that work differently than Linzess. It might be worth a discussion with your doctor about them as I don't think using a stimulant laxative like senna is going to be a long term solution for you.

I often hear this kind of message about long term use of a stimulant laxative.

Laxatives can help relieve and prevent constipation. But not all laxatives are safe for long-term use. Overuse of certain laxatives can lead to dependency and decreased bowel function.
