IBS sufferer since 2012

Hi I've been suffering from IBS since 2012. I was 14 at the time. I am 25 at the time of writing this post. When I started highschool, i was very insecure of my weight and throughout the whole first year of high school, I was eating very little and doing a lot of cardio. I went from 145 lbs to 99 lbs at the time. I realized the weight change made me very anorexic and my forearms became very thin, so in the summer of 2012, I spent the majority of time trying to get back to a decent shape. Unfortunately, I was young back then and made stupid decisions to get back to a decent shape - I was drinking lots of milk in place of water, eating high oil, high fat foods (such as bacon). I even tried to skip breakfast and eat a very large meal right before going to bed, in order to lower my metabolism so I can gain weight and recover from anorexia.

These unhealthy habits created stomach problems and therefore generated a lot of anxiety for me. In the morning especially, my IBS is at it's peak, and it's worse between the times of 8:45 am and 9:30 am - this is when i'm in the middle of commuting to work or when I'm at work. I'd even wake up at 7am, but my IBS doesn't kick in until an hour later - I dont know why that's the reason. When I wake up sometimes, I obviously feel bloated but I dont have to use the washroom right away; I even eat very little for breakfast, but any types of foods trigger it. Luckily, right now, I only come in the office once every few weeks. Since I work from home, my sleep schedule has not been the greatest and i've been waking up late - I think this triggers more anxiety and IBS in me. I'm trying to fix my schedule but it's just so hard, i sometimes sleep in on the days that i wfh. Even going out in public to hangout with friends or go to dinner, I get more anxiety and IBS symptoms.

I'd really appreciate any feedback on how I can break this cycle. I'm prescribed to anti anxiety meds that I take every morning, but it's not really working. I just bought peppermint tea so I'll see how that goes. I try working out but I don't have the motivation to do it on a daily basis, due to my sleep schedule and the increase in screen time from my computer, phone and video games.

Hello aznk1d97,

Having IBS can make anyone super anxious. It happens to all of us

IBS is notorious for being most difficult for some in the morning especially after breakfast. On one level it's normal for your gut to move things along after a meal. In the case of people with IBS the gut is in hyper mode and creates a lot of pain and diarrhea for some people as it's moving things along. This is called visceral hypersensitivity. It certainly makes my mornings pretty rough. You can try and curb this by using Buscopan 15-30 minutes before breakfast. It's available in Canada from any pharmacy. It kind of dulls the nerves in the gut so they don't go into hyper mode.

Depending on the type of anti-anxiety meds they could help or actually make thing worse. Did the doctor who prescribed those know that you are having a troubling gut especially the morning?

Pappermint is actually a good option. You might also consider IBgard. It is peppermint capsules. Peppermint is a natural muscle relaxer for the gut. It leads to less pain.

I am on my 2nd day on IBGARD - just taking one capsule in the morning before breakfast. I currently was using Sertraline as anti anxiety meds, but they havent been helpful. I will see my doctor tomorrow. Is Buscopan a prescription? I dont want to take too many of these medications, anti anxiety pills in the morning - I just want to stick to one for now.

Buscopan is not a prescription (click on their website). Just ask at the pharmacy in any drugstore for it (Shopper's Drug Mart, Rexall, etc...) . You can take 1-2 tablets (each tablet is 10mg) before each meal and up to 6 per day. I rarely need more than 1 before any meal. It can make you a little sleepy and give you a dry mouth. It doesn't last long, perhaps 3-4 hours. Buscopan is known as an anti-spasmodic.

Sertraline is a good anti-anxiety med, but unfortunately it really does nothing for your gut. It might actually add to a looser stool.

Personally, I struggled with IBgard. I found the peppermint made my whole stomach icy cool and minty and didn't help my abdominal pain. I do know that some people live by it so I hope it helps you.
