CandiJ
I started the low fodmap diet about two weeks ago. I’m currently having major headaches almost daily and symptoms of eating fodmaps, like cramps, bloating and fatigue, without eating almost any triggering foods. Is it true that you go through a detox phase starting this diet? If so, how long does it last? Thank you!
Jeffrey Roberts
Oh, that's a good question. Let me try and ask one of my Dietitian friends to answer that.
Jeffrey Roberts
Here is what was shared with me about this: Quote Developing headaches as a result of starting a low FODMAP diet is not a commonly reported side effect of the diet. It's possible, given a change in your diet--that perhaps you may not be eating enough or experiencing a reduction in beverage intake (such as caffeinated drinks or general hydration) that may prompt or contribute to headaches. Regardless, I would discuss your symptoms with your dietitian or GI doctor. Any diet change (including a low FODMAP diet) can contribute to gut microbial changes as our gut microbes feast off of foods that humans eat and don't digest. This is not generally regarded as a "detox" phase--but certainly changes in our gut microbiome may impact some extra-intestinal effects such as fatigue and bloating--but this effect has not been studied specifically.
