I have been recently diagnosed with IBS, and I believe that I am type "C." I am so discouraged since I don't know where to begin. My doctor has recommended a medicine and  a probiotic, and sometimes the medicine and the probiotic work, and sometimes, they don't. I am open to all suggestions since I am finding it hard to cope with this. Thank you, Jane

Hi Jane,

I'm sorry that you are finding it hard to cope. It might be helpful to know that you are not alone with this.

There are several medications for IBS-C so if one fails to relieve symptoms there are others that you can try. It's definitely not an illness that one solution works for everyone. It's a very individual treatment.

I'm curious about the probiotic. There aren't really any specifically for IBS-C. In general, probiotics might help an individual, but they aren't generally a treatment option.

For people new to IBS, it's often helpful to have your doctor offer a treatment that gives you the most difficulty, ie: abdominal pain, constipation, bloating, etc... It's hard to land on a treatment that tackles all the symptoms.
