Newly diagnosed

I am newly diagnosed with IBS. I eat very healthy and workout regularly.  Has anyone found a natural remedy that helps or a probiotic that works best? My stomach constantly feels like it's in knots and bloated.

Hi Betsy,

I think a lot of us eat healthy more so as a result of a limited diet because of IBS.

Are you familiar with the low FODMAP diet? It's a tool used by Dietitians to find some foods high in particular sugars that might be contributing to your symptoms. Modifying your diet by reducing the quantities of of high FODMAP foods helps 70% of people reduce their IBS symptoms.

Depending on the type of IBS you have, diarrhea or constipation, exercise helps. There is a fine line between enough exercise and too much which then might contribute to symptoms.

I'm somewhat familiar with that diet but would like examples of specific foods to eat and foods to avoid if you know a resource to use.  And when it comes to exercising,  I never thought about too much exercise causing a flare up.  This episode that prompted me to see my doc was after a pretty hard week of working out.  I'll have to find a balance.

There is no list per se. Unfortunately there are lots of lists on the internet, but that's not how the diet is supposed to be used. The low FODMAP diet is meant to be worked with a Dietitian familiar with the diet. It involves 3 phases and is not meant to be a permanent diet. Katescarlata.com's website offers a lot of information about it.

I know what you mean about working out. There is something called runners diarrhea which gives you a clue about the GI affects from running.
